Minx, the hot-as-fire manicure technique is taking over salons
Tyra will tell you herself that she’s not a big manicure girl, but Fall’s the hottest nails are so much drama even she’s curious! Beauty-in-the-know celebs already have us beat on “Minx” nails, but no way can they have all the fun! “Minx”—the metallic, rock-star-ish, shellac-y hard coat effect—is now officially a worldwide trend on the mani/pedi scene (so pay attention if you somehow missed this one). Golden Lightning, Fishnet and Stripes designs have been on the scene for a minute, but who knew there are over 150 more looks?!
Now all nail fanatics can do their own thing. (By that we mean you can get creative, um, we do not mean Do-It-Yourself!) Applying the fabulous nail coat should be done by a certified Minx nail technician. Minxs live in high-end salons across the country, like 'Cure Beauty Bar, a lush nail salon & spa in Brooklyn, New York. Owner LaShunda Davis demystifies the process. -Joicelyn Dingle
tyra.com: What are Minx Nails? And how are they applied?
MN: Minx nails are only one of the hottest trends for nails right now. It's basically a heated film applied to a clean nail that comes in amazing colors, patterns and prints. The application is done under a heat lamp after a dry manicure. Once applied, you are out the door. No drying time! To remove, you simply re-heat and peel them off.
tyra.com: What or who do your customers reference when they request Minx nails? Or how do most of them know about the trend?
MN: Most people come in and either reference Beyonce or Rihanna. The cool girls learned about the trend by from blogs and word of mouth. Everyone loves the Metallic Gold and Silver…but we love to push to edge and mix it up with color and designs.
tyra.com: Are your nail technicians trained to apply Minx?
MN: Absolutely, our nail stylists are trained and we continually come up with colors schemes and ways to sport your Minxs.
tyra.com: What affect do Minx nails have on your nails? Is it potentially damaging to the nails like acrylic and silk wrap?
MN: The great perk about Minx is that it actually gives your nails a chance to breathe without any polishes or chemicals because the nail has to be completely clean and oil free for application.
tyra.com: Who would you not recommend these nails for?
MN: If you are constantly in water, dig ditches or like scratching people, maybe Minx isn’t for you.
tyra.com: A set of Minx nails cost $55 for a full set at 'Cure. How does the Tyra.com frugal fashionista participate in this trend?
MN: Understanding that not everyone is ready to go for a full set…try one or two nails with polish! A totally fun way to jazz up your manicure. A single Minx nail is $8, tres chic.
tyra.com: How long do the application last?
MN: We tell our customers 5 to 10 days, explaining that the tips are always the first to show wear. The Gold and Silver Lightning look the flyest but probably quickest to go.
tyra.com: Does 'Cure do traditional nails designs too or are you strictly Minx-ed?
MN: We are fortunate enough to have amazing artists on our team that can do everything from colored French to Zebra prints. I think that the hands and feet are two places you can have fun without spending a lot of money, and still show a little of your personality.
