The March Issue // Modeling // Model Citizen

Model Citizen

You learned from Top Model that models really do have to work--it takes a lot more than just being a tall, pretty woman prancing around in designer clothes all day. But did you know that for many of the world's leading faces today, a lot of their work happens when the cameras are off? When these models are not at photo shoots or on the runway, many of them are actually focusing their efforts on making the world a better place.  This is the first of our series highlighting the models we love to love, for all the right reasons…

Maggie Rizer

Maggie's father, (Kevin O' Dea Rizer) died of AIDS. Growing up, she recalls her dad being open about his illness. It changed her. As a result she spends her free time working with different charities, spreading HIV/ AIDS awareness.

Jade Parfit

Jade (and her friend Jasmine Guinness) started an establishment in 2000 called "Clothesline." Through the organization, they hold charity fashion shows to raise money and promote awareness of HIV/ AIDS. For them, improving the lifestyle of those living with the disease is just as important as a cure.

Alessandra Ambrosia

Alessandra is an active member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MSS) and boldly she speaks out to those battling MS. Her empathy is likely felt because the disease struck very close to home for her. Her own father was diagnosed with MS.

Alek Wek

Alek takes great pride in the people of her country, the war torn African nation, Sudan. She volunteers her support to a charity that advocates migration rights, the U.S. Committee for the Refugees Advisory Council (USCRI). Alek was a young girl when she migrated herselfÑand the memories still haunt her.

Liya Kebede

Liya is a member W.H.O. (the World Health Organization) and founder of the Liya Kebede Foundation, dedicated to mothers and children. Her Foundation seeks to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality. The goal is to work with non-profit organizations to increase awareness and visibility of healthcare for this population. Her charity has helped hundreds of newborns and their families; though, she doesnÕt deny, "there's still a lot of work to be done."

it just goes to show that not all models lack depth :) it's good that see it. I feel a lot of models get that stereotype. Well, for good reason, but not every model is full of fluff and are dumb.

Alek, you're a huge inspiration to your fellow Africans around the world. You make us proud!! Keep up the work!!

I think this page is really good becasue in a way it shatters the illusion of models, and shows us that they are poeple who care and do charity work, not for publicity but for reasons that matter to them.

Balancing work and everyday needs while making the world a better place. I would love to do the same someday. what would make things better is if all the well-off people do the same, it would show others alot. And maby we would not be in a recession.... But much gratitude to those that are helping others in need...
